Getting students to rediscover reading

22/9/2015

Engaging and motivating students to read can be as easy as providing them with more choice.

Often students don't engage with reading as they are given a standard text across the classroom, which doesn't provide for their individual needs and interests or may be at a level too easy or hard for their reading ability.

Students get passionate about reading when:

  • They have some choice in selecting their own text
  • They can access text in different ways to suit their learning needs (graphic novels, picture books, novels, multimodal texts (ebooks, videos))
  • The text appeals to their interests, life experience, background or context.

Student ebook platform

Students at Catholic Education Office Parramatta have access to a Student eBook platform and a non-fiction database of articles that provides additional text choice to the wide range of books available at their own school libraries.  They can access this via the eLibrary option on the student login page of classm8.

Teacher resources for differentiation

Teachers can access more strategies around differentiation of texts via the Mindful Learning Mindful Teaching Ning  - Differentiated Instruction webpage .

Contact Learning Exchange for more information on any of these resources.
